Chemistry: Challenges and Solutions

Spontaneous vs Nonspontaneous Reactions (animation)

In an oxidation-reduction reaction, sometimes the process by which one element gives off an electron and another one takes happens spontaneously.  Other times, it’s nonspontaneous. In this case, when reactants are mixed together, they don’t really want to transfer electrons to each other and energy needs to be applied to drive the reaction forward.
