In workshop video #3, Ms. Brownfield introduces her students to Indian
boarding schools. I really like how she used a KWL chart to assess what
her students already knew about the topic and the book *My Name is Seepeetza
*, which they would be reading. Ms. Brownfield asks her student to examine
the cover of the book for clues. I do this in my classroom too. I like to
see what
the students can figure out and the predictions they will make before they

Ms. Brownfield uses journals during the unit. The journal includes a
reading guide, a research guide, the KWL chart, and blank pages for
journaling and new word finding. I like the idea of putting this all
together so the students have access to each assignment when needed. I
liked to do this while reading novels because my students know what will be
expected off them during the unit.

One activity Ms. Brownfield has some of her students participate in is a
fishbowl discussion. I was glad to see one of these in action in an actual
classroom. I think that the activity can be good for a few different
reasons. One you can have your advance students who understand how to
discuss literature be in the fishbowl discussion to show others in the
class how to do it. Another is that students will develop verbal skills
and will learn how to back up and defend their opinions. Third students
will learn things from each other.

Over all, I really enjoyed Ms. Brownfield's actities while teaching a
multicultural unit.
