[Teacher-talknovel] In Search of the Novel #5

Why do I have to read this? This is a question students ask often. They
don't realize that teachers have real reasons for the novels they choose.
But I wonder if the reasons we give are good enough. I have used some
novels because they were in my classroom or I was told to or they connected
to the curriculum. Do students care about any of these things? There are
many reasons besides curriculum for students to read a novel. But will
they still believe they should read it?

If we choose a book that connects with the students, many things can happen
in the students' minds. They can be inspired. They can have their minds
changed. They can learn about other cultures and other lives. They can
see decisions made and how they will turn out. They can be challenged
emotionally and intellectually. When all of these things happen, students
can finally understand why they have to read novels selected in class.
