Thinking back to a posting from October, I think that
students get the most out of a novel when they can
apply what they have learned to their own lives. On one of the
tapes a class was discussing Great Expectations. One student
commented that while the novel was difficult and too long,
many of the same situations encountered in the
novel are ones we often face in everyday life. He added that
by reading the novel he gained insight that may help him in
similar situations. I think it is up to us, as teachers, to
lead them to discover these parallels in their reading.
