All the research and common sense points to reading aloud to children, n=
o
matter what age, to get them "hooked" on literature. Sstudents also lea=
rn what
"fluency in reading" is all about from a teacher role model, and it also=

improves their listening skills (a skill that I certainly need to work o=
n
myself!!!) BUT- instead of killing your vocal cords either 1-tape yours=
elf
reading first or second period, or 2-buy audiotapes of professionals rea=
ding
(especially authors reading their own stuff and James Earl Jones reading=

ANYTHING in Shakespeare).
We also need to provide time in class for sustained silent reading, and =
as
teachers, we need to model this as well (not grade papers while students=
 are
reading.) How to do it? Abandon a bunch of "stuff" by doing two novels=
 really
well, rather than nine novels half baked. Have students write literatur=
e
journals and exchange and comment, rather than teacher reading all and g=
rading.
Get them on the email discussions, just like we are having!!! :-) don't=
 do
class sets of novels- have each student read seaparate titles and then "=
sell"
book to class in a 30 second advertisement to generate interest and swap=
=2E
