I am taking the workshop on my own. I usually start off by using a KWL
chart so that I know what the kids already know about the topic and if
there is any misinformation. I also let them know that I will be
exploring and learning right along with them. This is hard for some
students because of the perception that "teachers know all of the
answers"! If I have an idea what the kids know and any misconceptions I
can help guide their inquiry when they start to get way off base. I want
them to have some success. If they don't have at least a little bit of
success then they lose interest in the exploration. It is sometimes hard
to step back but it gets a little easier with time. There are times when
I have gotten so involved in what the kids are doing I lose track of
time! It can be an exciting journey for all of us.

Hello,
Is anyone else out there taking this workshop alone? I wanted to ask
someone about "letting go." I am finding it hard to let go of the
curriculum that I am accustomed to teaching! It is a whole new way of
thinking for me. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting started
on a
new unit? How do you start out? Do you just throw materials out there
and
let the children lead the way? It seems so foreign to me...
