I try to bite my lip when students start steering down what I consider the wrong path to their set ups and data collection. I have to step back and let them make mistakes and talk out theor set-ups with each other. They can identify a common goal and will decipher whether or not the set up is the best way to collect data. As for data collection, when data seems invalid, I will ask the students "From this data you are telling me that...." and the students can say yes or no. If no, I ask them to explain what they are trying to show me and that steers them in the direction of gaining validity to their results.
