I think [this exercise] would really help my students to think about the different truths. I have some students who are scared to write fiction and they also think, you know . . . they'll say, "I know I should write what I know, but my life isn't that interesting." And I think if they started with something in their life, a story, and then to try to give themselves the freedom to depart from that.
