I teach 7th grade and have tried a couple different things. Foam pipe
insulation from the hardware store works good. If you use 1/2" X 6'
pieces, then cut them in half long way, they are flexible and a regular
marble can be used. Ho many pieces and how long you make them depends
on the quatity of students you have and money!! If you group them in
3-4 students per group it is not too bad.

I teach third grade. What you probably could do is use poster boards
or
cardboards and bend it at different intervals to give a roller coaster
effect.

I totally agree. What grade do you teach? I teach 7th, and I was
trying to brainstorm ways in which I could adapt this activity with my
students to introduce the physics of roller coasters.

Just a little note to say how much I enjoyed Workshop 4. It was fun
to
watch such young children investigating the speed of balls rolling
down
ramps. I was amazed to see how they used their critical thinking
skills
to derive to the point that the material of the balls made a
difference
in the speed of the ball. This seems like an activity I could use with
my students.
