Re: [Channel-talklit3to5] Workshops 2 and 3

I have used the KWL chart frequently to begin the discussion of certain topics. Students usually know a lot about a topic, but truly want to know things they may be afraid to ask. After we are finished with the story or the unit, we then record what we have learned.

I just attended a workshop for learning styles. It was extremely useful and interesting. I am always adjusting my style and attempting to reach every one of my students with various activities. This workshop, I walked away with hundreds of ideas!

good luck with teaching:) Gail Shepard

Since beginning to teach at the college level, I have had to lead
several discussion sessions. One of the best ever was discussing
different learning styles in general. Students were able to be extremely
articulate as each had several stories about teachers who were helpful
to them and teachers who just did not understand them or would not make
accommodations for them.
It is obvious that framing topics and discussions that tap into the
personal lives of students is very important for good discussions. (this
is pointed out in videos 1 and 2 also)
What suggestions do you all have for being a good facilitator of
discussions? What has worked for you in the past? What recommendations
do you have for working with students of different ages?
