The model I use for electron configuration is that of an "Electron Parking Garage". I line up the students (posing as electrons), then seat them one at a time at tables in the classroom. The first 2 students or "electron cars" fill up the 1s1 and 1s2 parking spaces. The next 3 students sit at one side only of the next 3 tables; the next 3 join them to model pairing up. And so on.... This activity gets them moving and visualizing the pattern, and we refer back to it when using electron configs in molecular bonding.
This series is reminding me that I need to simplify and use more models/demos, that although I can visualize all aspects of chemistry, high school students are in progress.
