Keith Gilyard

Run Time: 00:09:57

Keith Gilyard reads his poem, "The Hatmaker," and discusses his writing process with students in Sante Fe, New Mexico. He invites the students to write their own poetry and encourages them to capture the sights and sounds of their environment. Gilyard explains how his cultural background as an African American from New York City informs his work. He discusses the interplay between intention and interpretation. "You have an idea of what you want to convey, but language is such that it doesn't nail everything down so perfectly. So there's room for interpretation. Once you interpret it, you have as much ownership over that poetry as I do."
