St. Petersburg: Russia's Window on the West visits the city of St. Petersburg, which historically was established to link Russia to the Western world. During Communist rule, an era of isolationism, the city (then known as Leningrad), lost its preeminence as an economic center. As market forces now take hold, St. Petersburg is poised to lead Russia's new market economy.

Vologda: Russian Farming in Flux, shows how climate and latitude can result in low winter temperatures and poor soils that limit agriculture yet provide an abundance of timber resources in boreal forests.
