Our Theme: Surviving the Winter in Mexico
When Journey North begins in February, the Monarchs are at the over-wintering sites in Mexico. For the first 6 weeks our theme is survival. This journal is designed to be used while the monarchs are in Mexico, before the spring migration begins in March. Through Journey North News updates, students explore the habitat and climate of the monarch's winter home. They also learn about the adaptations monarchs have that help them to survive.

Tips for Teachers
Use these journal pages the way we designed them, or customize them for your class. Just click to download, open through your Word application, and print! Or edit to enter your own questions, categories, or layout.

Overview

  • Print a cover for each student and a stack of journal pages. Journals can be stapled, bound, or kept in each students' pocket folder to pull out on "Journey North days."
  • The map should reinforce for students the geography of the monarch's annual migration cycle. They can see the location of Mexico's monarch sanctuaries, and where they are in relation to students' hometowns.

Journal Sections

  • Habitat Temperatures: Each week, students record the temperature at the monarchs over-wintering habitat in Mexico and at one place in the monarch's northern breeding habitat: the students' hometown. Link to these forecasts: Winter habitat temperature (Angangueo), Hometown temperature. (Find your town.)
  • Headline is a chance for students to identify the main idea of the week's news and information in their own creative ways.
  • Highlight is a place were students can summarize information or describe something that intrigues or puzzles them.
  • Answer Journaling Questions that appear in every migration update. Just flip the page over for more space.

Using Journal Pages for Assessment: As you review students' journal pages throughout the season, you can use this Monarch Winter Habitat assessment scale to document what they've learned.
