Hugging the Coast
These monarchs are roosting a short distance from the Atlantic Ocean. Strong north winds carried them to the southern side of New York's Fire Island on Monday, September 10th. Coastlines are a great place to watch fall migration because the wind funnels monarchs there. Flying along the coast is a monarch's last ditch effort to avoid the dangers of crossing open water.
