Exploring Connections
Introduction | The Tangram Puzzle | Making Connections | Reflection Questions | Your Journal

You've just explored a problem, examining the many connections within its mathematics content and to the other Process Standards. Now we'd like you to write about your own classroom practice. Read the questions below and answer one in light of the students and content you teach.

Questions to write and reflect about:
  • The tangram problems were designed to help you explore and consider connections in the teaching of mathematics. How could you adapt some of these activities for your own students? Be specific.
  • In many mathematics curricula, we "cover" a topic, such as shape, and then move on to another topic, such as addition. What is the advantage of connecting several concepts within a single mathematics activity, such as the tangram problem, and then extending those activities over multiple lessons?
  • Choose a mathematics task that you currently use with your students. How might you connect this task to other mathematical ideas, to other topics of study, or to the life experiences of your students?
Three ways to write and reflect:
  • Use pen and paper.
  • Use a word processor.
  • Use the form below.
Be sure to save what you have written before you navigate out of the journal section.
