Interactives

These interactives illustrate concepts and give opportunities to test out ideas that have been explored in the units. Some set up concepts within the units, while others extend them through idealized real-world applications.

HELPFUL TIP:
These interactives require JavaScript and Flash Player 7. You can download the latest version of Flash Player at Adobe's website.

Figurate NumbersFigurate Numbers

Some of the first people to study numbers as objects were the Pythagoreans. One of the most important properties to the Pythagoreans was a number's shape. This interactive illustrates how playing with numbers can lead to mathematical discoveries.

This interactive should take 15 - 20 minutes to complete.

Shotgun SequencingShotgun Sequencing

Using combinatorics, this interactive looks at the ordering of DNA. You will create structure by building a directed graph and evaluating it in a mathematical way.

This interactive should take 20-30 minutes to complete.

RobotsRobots

Because this interactive covers an abstract concept of configuration space, you may benefit by reading the text chapter first. In this interactive you will learn what a configuration space is and how to model it as a surface.

This interactive should take 30-40 minutes to complete.

HypercubeHypercube

By modeling objects of lower dimensions, you will be able to gain an understanding of the hypercube, which exists in the fourth dimension.

This interactive should take 20-30 minutes to complete.

SymmetrySymmetry

Using common motions, such as rotation and reflection, this interactive will introduce the parameters for symmetry groups. You will be able to experiment with wallpaper patterns using their base objects.

This interactive should take 20-30 minutes to complete.

Galton BoxGalton Board

Using a machine called the Galton board, this interactive will validate the Law of Large Numbers as well as illustrate the Central Limit Theorem.

This interactive should take 30-40 minutes to complete.

Spatial GamesSpatial Games

Common game theory scenarios will be modeled spatially. This interactive provides an opportunity to observe outcomes and connect them quantitatively to a payoff matrix.

This interactive should take 20-30 minutes to complete.

NetworksNetworks

This interactive is a concept-building exercise, which explores the characteristics of networks and allows you to build networks that meet specific criteria.

This interactive should take 30-40 minutes to complete.

MetronomeMetronome

This interactive simulates the correlation of a metronome's ticking to a sine wave as well as the synchronization of multiple metronomes on an unstable surface.

This interactive should take 20-30 minutes to complete.
