Earth & Space Science: About the Course

Teacher-Talk EarthSpace

[Channel-talkearthspace] session 7

As I reflect on session 7, I think that having a sense of size, distance, and time scales relating to the study of the Earth and our Solar System can greatly inform our understanding of many Earth and space science concepts. It helps us understand why we may nott see the details involved with our naked eye or the changes that develop within our lifetime. The data is on such a grand scale compared to that which we encounter in our daily lives. We better appreciate the complexity of the science when we have a sense of these scales.
Based on the math and science objectives I must address as a 6th grade teacher, the issues of scale that could be incorporated into my science curriculum would relate to the depths of Earth's layers and the diameter and circumference of Earth. By using scale models and reference points to which the students can relate, they will be more likely to grasp the magnitude of the measurements in question.
