Re: [Channel-talkbio] Human Evolution Unit

From: Deanna Gess <dcfisher70@hotmail.com>
Date: Thu Jul 21 2005 - 16:26:34 EDT

I teach 8th grade envronmental science in Macon, GA.  What about you?  I would never tell them how much I procrastinate either.  I feel so ridiculous right now! I still have a good bit to do. (5 more units) Things just kept coming up...other classes, out of town weddings... I feel like I need to celebrate tomorrow night after I mail this off because of the week I have put myself through! Are you working towards your masters or what? I am doing a masters in teaching and I had to take a few grad level bio courses which is what I am getting certified in. I have a bio undergrad degree, but some of this stuff is hard! It is taking me a while to figure it out.

When I read the intructions for the course I thought we had to write a little reflection type thing after every activity that should be part of our journal.  That is what I have been doing. But your idea sound great! Then I already have ton of the paper written because I have been doing that all along. I was just scared of not documenting enough participation. But what else are you to do when you are working individually, you know? I think you had said you took one of their classes before? Did you put your name and address on each paper like it says in the instructions or just on your notebook? I worry about too much...

And this is a long email! Can you tell I am still procrastinating!!! When will I learn?? Ha!

>What I'm doing for my journal is all my responses to the unit activities. I've answered the questions, done some internet research and included any graphs or tables made. (You should see my poor drawing of the penny!) If I had to do an acitivity, I'm including any proof of work either on another piece of paper or in the explanation of my results.
> For my reflection paper, I might break down what I liked and didn't like for each unit. Otherwise, I don't know how I could do a 3-5 page paper on 13 different units.
> I'm on the last unit-Genetically Modified Organisms. That and Biodiversity should have been first as I'm enjoying them the least (course it could be b/c I'm mentally exhausted). Can't wait for Friday night!
> Where do you teach? What grade/subject? I agree on the Channel Talk discussions-I meant to start earlier, but kept putting it off. Then I couldn't get in for some reason, so I had to re-apply to Channel Talk. Oh well.
> Time to finish this up! The grind is on (I'll never tell my students how badly I procrastinate).

I started off writing little journal entries after every unit, but now I am thinking of using those in my reflective paper. I am a little worried I don't have enough documentation that I did the work, you know? And on demonstrations like the PCR in microbial diversity...are you including what you made when you mail the work off?

> That project sounds cool. I just took a Bio-sex & drugs class and we touched on that. Very interesting! That would be great to get the students to realize how dangerous drugs are. They have no idea. I don't have a great project topic yet, I have to dig around for some lesson plans and think on them.

Overall, the course was interesting, but too advanced for me to teach. At least I hope that I understand some topics in Chemistry better! For my course reflection paper, I talked about my feelings about the course, its topics and effectiveness and whether or not I could implement them. I'll probably do the same for this one. As I teach a lot of these topics on an introductory level, I really have enjoyed learning more in depth concepts. I'm going to do a proposed project on the affect of Ecstasy on the brain. I loved the Neuro. section and know how big Ecstasy has become lately on the drug scene (my husband is a cop). If I taught high school, where I would have more freedom to teach tough topics, this would be something I might do as hopefully I could prevent some students from trying it due to its affects on the brain. My husband has offered to try it, and as it is a new project, I'll do it as well. I'll just mention in my lesson reflection the lack of kids in my area. I had received an e-mail from a person by the name of Tara who had just sent out all of her work for this class. I wish that they had more people involved or an easier way to find help for some of the activities( perhaps fix the typos as well).

I am working towards my certification in teaching HS biology so I guess I will develop a project for that. I am also worrying if I am doing enough written work for it. I am doing the same thing you are doing so hopefully we will be okay. I am taking this over the summer so I will be sending everything off on Friday. I can't believe it is already here! What are you writing in your reflective paper? Didn't it say in the directions that the project can be proposed? I won't have any students for examples of work either. I don't think I can talk my husband into it. ha! He has his own classes to study for.

I've spent the bulk of the last three weeks watching videos, reading the text and doing all the activities. I've typed up all of my responses and just need to finalize a project. I teach 7th grade, so much of these topics are not approached. I teach an introductory unit on Genetics and Evolution, but do not get into as much detail. I also have no students for the student work! The only kids around me are in elementary school. I may have to beg my husband to be my student.

I was glad they supplied answers so I could figure it out backwards. I think you wil still be able to answer the questions and understand what they want even if the activity doesn't quite work. Tara

In part 2, I am supposed to calibrate the clock of sequence divergence to known age, but the manual told me to put the sequence divergence on the X axis and the known age on the Y axis. A proper line graph should have the controlled data, in this case the known age, on the X axis. Am I correct in my belief or do they know something that I do not?
