Maps have historically been tools of empire. Maps of the routes of the Lewis and Clark expedition have tended to represent the West as empty country, there for the exploring and taking. This 1932 sketch map of a portion of the route of the Lewis and Clark expedition, made by historian Laura Tolman Scott for a biography of Sacagawea, is a little different.
